Dairy free in the kitchen

My husband has been back to work now for a week. With the company he works for he can be home anywhere from 5 to 8pm and sometimes though not many even later. I remember one time before he deployed he came home after 10pm. Anyway, due to his work eating out is not as easy as it was before he went back to work. It has made me cook a lot more at home then ever before. It is more then that though, I now spend a minimum of an hour at the grocery store most of the time I am reading labels, of some of our old staples then standing their in the store trying to figure out how to make my husband's favorite foods into something our son can eat. This is not easy. I wish that there was an app that you could just scan the barcode of and it would flash green for its dairy free, yellow if it is used on shared lines or in a place that has dairy and red for it has dairy in it. To bad i am not in anyway techie enough to do this.

This past week I have made a number of dairy free meals some keepers some tweaks and some never again. So far my greatest success has been the chocolate pudding.

Using nothing but 1/4c sugar, 1/2c dark chocolate Hersey's cocoa powder and 1 box of silken tofu. All you have to do is put it in a blender and then let it sit in the fridge. Everyone loved this, my daughter a picky 2 year old, my son the dairy allergy child, myself, my mom and my dad. The only one who did not like it was my even pickier husband. After a quick consult with my vegetarian best friend, I figured out that the "sour" taste he was having was due to his not liking of dark chocolate. He is willing to try it again but with a "milk" chocolate substituted for the dark. I like dark chocolate, so if you do to then you should really try this delicious dairy free dessert.

I know think I am going to post some of my more fun meals once a week. Maybe tasty Tuesdays or something like that.

buffets for older kids?

When  we go out to eat I am always worried about my son, and what he can and can not eat at any location. My biggest fears is that something will get lost in translation and he will get sick or worse. No place to eat is as nerve wracking as a buffet. We as a family love to eat at buffets. My daughter eats her weight in rice, Mandarin oranges, watermelon, cucumbers, black beans, and some meat, and my son enjoys eating hard boiled eggs, soy beans from the salad area and jello for dessert. The kids are free till the age of 3 so it doesn't bother us to go out and eat, but as my son gets older I wonder if eating at these types of places will even work for us. The language barrier is one thing but the foods being cross contaminated is another concern. I wonder if other people eat at buffets and if so what they let their kids eat from them.

Restaurant Food List ~ Red Robin.....Yumm!

For my husband's main meal upon returning from deployment was a request to go to Red Robin. It was just built a few months before he returned and as everyone knows Red Robin is known for their Delicious gooey hamburgers and cheeseburgers. So I was hesitant to take my little guy there. The fears were quickly shot down as soon as I was looking at their website. they have an amazing allergy site online that lets you select which items you need to avoid then gives you a list in breakdowns of what you can eat. Since my son is only allergic to dairy that was the only item I selected. So below is the list of items that are said to be safe for dairy allergies.

4th of July Extravaganza

Hope everyone had a good 4th of July. If you are like me it can be a time of stress and uncertainty for your food allergy little one(s). Every year we go to the city's fireworks show at the local park. This was my son's first year going and we were really on guard with everything, mostly cause you have to be. He couldn't go into the bounce house with his sister because other little kids had ice cream all over their faces or were eating pizza or popcorn and we couldn't chance the cross contamination. We did let him sit at the door and get bounced, he love it. We made sure he didn't get touched by random people as well, and he had his medical alert dog tag on at all times outside his clothes while we were anywhere near people. We also had plenty of wipes and sanitizer with us.

I packed the kids safe food as well. I made them veggie pasta and we also had grapes, sliced apples with peanut butter, and marshmallow peeps ( DAIRY FREE). As for me and my husband and my parents we did what we always did, bought subs from a local shop and bought fresh squeezed lemonade at the park. Good Times.

The best part of the night of course the fireworks. My little guy did great for his first time, we did have a few issues with the really bright fireworks but that is due to his light sensitivity. And he past out in the stroller on the way back to the shuttle bus. His big sister stayed awake till we got her into the car seat to drive home. It was a good night.

Restaurant Food List ~ Olive Garden

The time has come for the one and only Olive Garden. On their restaurant food list it states that everything is made to order but things on their grills or fryer can not be guaranteed free from cross contamination. My son and my daughter were able to share a meal here which is something that doesn't get to happen very often but when it does it is an amazing feeling that is hard for people to understand unless they go through this as well. They had the kids build your own pasta, and had boiled small shells with no sauce and an add on of a single meatball which was on its own plate and came completely separated from the pasta.

Here is the list of items that has been written as dairy free on the food list the manager handed me from his kitchen.
  • Kids create your own (CYO) Fettuccine
  • Kids CYO Whole Wheat Linguine
  • Kids CYO Cavatappi
  • Kids CYO Small Shells
  • Kids CYO Tomato
  • Kids CYO Meat Sauce
  • Kids CYO Add Italian Sausage
  • Kids CYO Add Shrimp
  • Kids Add Pepperoni
  • Herb-Grilled Salmon (order from GF menu)(Grilled so possible CC)
  • Breadsticks (Plain)
  • Tomato Sauce
  • Pasta Fagioli
  • Spaghetti with Meat Sauce
  • Spaghetti & Italian Sausage
  • Bucanti
  • Cavatappi
  • Large Paccheri
  • Tri-Colored Vegetable Penne
  • Whole Wheat Linguine
  • Gluten-Free Rotini
  • Sausage Meatballs
  • Sauteed Shrimp
  • Crab Meat
  • Raspberry Sauce
Items in orange are actual meals everything thing else is add ons, side items, and sauces. As always you want to make sure you tell your server about your allergy so they will know not to add butter and to be more careful in the kitchen with the cross contamination.

If you have a restaurant or other eatery that you would like to have information for let me know in the comments or on facebook.

Mall Kiosk Food List ~ Doc Popcorn

Doc Popcorn is a new kiosk in the Altamonte Mall in Altamonte Springs, Florida. I am unsure if it is a chain or just a single entity. Anyway, it is a flavored popcorn food stop. They do have a few dairy free items, but only ONE popcorn popping machine. They did say they clean it out at the end of every flavor but they make as needed. So if you have serious Cross Contamination issues like my son. I would most likely say to stay away.

I am actually posting an image of the list and then explaining it a bit more in depth. The reason for this is that the list is not as easily understood as it could be.
The flavors you CAN eat if you decide to eat there are as followed:
  • Salt- and- pepper
  • Klassic Kettle
  • Carmel Kettle
  • Sinfully Cinnamon
As I stated already they only have one popping machine. You can ask them yourself and if you are comfortable with how they clean the machine enough then enjoy. For my son it isn't worth the risk, since he has such an issue with the slightest bit of cross contamination.

If you have a restaurant or other eating establishment you would like me to find information on please leave a comment below, or on the Facebook page as well.

Orlando FARE Walk ~ 2014

The FARE Walk at the Blue Jacket Park in Central Florida was today. It was very exciting some Teams had team shirts. Next Year we will have one for our team Wes' Wheyless Wonders. We ended up in 6th place, but raised money for a good cause. Here are some pictures from today.

It was a good time and I am glad that we were able to join in. After the Walk we went to Mellow Mushroom, and my son had his first ever piece of pizza. Vegan crust with Vegan Diaya Cheese. I have to admitt it was very good. He also had a kids meal that he SHARED with his non food allergy sister for the first time. They had the kids pretzel with sliced apples. What about cross contamination you ask.

At Mellow Mushroom they have written in their menu that they have a trained staff that will change their aprons, gloves, wash hand, and use a different oven and table to prepare, cook and serve from. So their is no fear of cross contamination.

Needless to say it was a perfect way to end our adventure out with the Central Florida FARE Walk.

Pirates Dinner Adventure~ Orlando Location

For my parents 35th wedding anniversary I got tickets for them and my kids and myself to Pirates Dinner Adventure. My mom had always wanted to go and since they are having a special for $18 dollar tickets for their 18 year anniversary. I made sure when I bought the tickets to find out about the food for my son. The meals can be special made in ways of Kosher, vegetarian, and GF. But when I asked about dairy allergies the tone quickly changed to maybe you should bring your toddler some food. The meal without upgrades consisted of Roasted chicken, butter steamed veggies, and a type of Mexican style rice. If you purchased an upgrade you could have a NY strip steak.

So in the way I saw it, my son was young enough that I was ale to have food readily available to him, but as he gets older it might be more difficult in that type of place.

Jeremiah's Italian Ice ~ DON'T EAT list

Jeremiah's is a homemade Italian ice and and gelatio establishment. This place has a bit of a different list for their allergens. Since they make so many flavors they found it easier to list what you can not eat as opposed to what you can eat.

So this list that follows are the flavors you CAN NOT eat. Repeat do not eat these flavors if you have an allergy to dairy.

  • All Ice Cream & Gelatis
  • Cafe Latte
  • Cake Batter
  • Chocolate Chips (in chocolate ice)
  • Cookies & Cream
  • Scoop Froggy Frog

Mother's Day Resturant Food List ~ Boston Market

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there. Today myself, kids, my mom and my dad went to Boston's Market for the Mother's special. If you don't know what that is. It is where the moms get to eat for free as long as someone is paying for their meals. So my dad and my daughter paid for food and myself and my mom where free. My son is the one with dairy allergies. So I made sure to get my chicken on its own plate so he could have some food.

They only have 4 items which he can have so here is the list of dairy free items that you can have at the restaurant.

  • Rotisserie Chicken
  • Rotisserie Turkey
  • Steamed Vegetables
  • Cinnamon Apples
Even though they veggies and apples are dairy free they are in the same area as the other dairy containing foods. The meats are kept separate and that is why I found it okay to share my chicken with him, and he loved it.

Our 1st major issue while eatting out

Today we went to Applebee's. As you know if you have been reading my blog I did a food list of this restaurant so how could I follow the list and still my son have problems when he ate there. Simple, Cross Contamination of the FRYER OIL!

I gave him 2 chips from the chips and salsa he proceeded to vomit this horribly thick goop. I picked him up out of the high chair and rushed him into the bathroom to make sure he didn't vomit anymore in front of other customers again.

The waitress, food runner, manager, and hostess all came over to see what happened and if he was okay, since we had said that he was allergic to dairy and had checked to make sure that there was no butter or anything on his food. What we were told was that the fryer oil is shared with anything that needs to be fried. Things like Mozzarella sticks and pot stickers all go into the same oil.

The staff apologized profusely. Everyone kept coming over to make sure he was alright, I luckily did not have to epi him since he got it out of him so fast is my thought.

So remember if it is fried always ask if there is a separate fryer and separate oil. If the answer is no, I would say stay away.

Restaurant Food List ~ Applebee's

Applebee's are practically everywhere. So, it is no surprise that someone has asked me to find information for them. Applebee's has a wonderful allergen list. They have broken down their menu for multiple food allergies, including but not limited to Soy and Peanut allergies. The restaurant has stated that they use a shared kitchen with cooking and preparation of food items and places like the fryer use both dairy free items as well as dairy items. The company also states in bold that because they use a shared area that they can not guarantee that the food items can be completely free of allergens. So to me this sounds like the biggest problem here is cross contamination, but then again that is a major issue everywhere.

Here is a list of the food items that Applebee's says is dairy free.
  • Chips & Salsa
  • Riblet Basket
  • House Sirloin
  • New York Strip
  • Ribeye
  • Steak & fried Shrimp
  • Steak & Honey BBQ Chicken

Restaurant Food List ~ Mellow Mushroom

Today we tackle our favorite food to eat when your too tired to cook. That is right Pizza! But wait, how can we get pizza when we are to tired to cook it ourselves. The answer is Mellow Mushroom. Not only can you do dairy free their but they also have an amazing allergen sorting system that you can view here. This is a great tool if you have multiple food allergies.

Mellow Mushroom has been around a lot longer then you would think but I will admit I never knew they had a menu for the dairy free using Daiya Foods Cheeses.  As with all restaurants you still need to let the servers know that you have a dairy allergy even if you order the dairy free version of their food.

So here is the list of foods that Mellow Mushroom says is dairy free
  • Tossed Salad
  • Kids PB&J
  • Kids Organic Apple
  • Anchovies

So instead of using orange to say the full meals it is going to be used to highlight the important aspects of the pizza you need to make sure you ask for.

If you have a place you would like me to try to find the information for let me know in the comments.
Now, enjoy some pizza!

Restaurant Food List ~ First Watch

This is one of my family's favorite places to eat on a weekend brunch. They don't use any heat lamps or fryers and all their food is made to order. This means that they can work with you more then other places on working on food for you. This pretty much means they can make your eggs, toast, and sandwiches dry(no butter) or without cheese.

Here is a list of items that the company has said is dairy free. They do have a full allergen list online here, so if you have more then one food allergy you can get a better idea of what it has to offer.

  • Tri-Athlete
  • Lean Machine
  • Fruit Bowl
  • Fresh, Seasoned Potatoes
  • English Muffin (DRY)
  • Ham
  • Bacon
  • Sausage
  • Turkey Sausage
Remember the most important thing is to always tell the server that you have an allergy to dairy. The items listed in orange are actual meals, everything else is side items. Please note that on their website it says that they can not make their waffles or pancakes dairy free. And the sandwiches need to be cold, unpressed, and modified to become dairy free.

If you have a restaurant you want me to compile a food list for let me know in the comments below.

Restaurant Food List ~ Bob Evans

Hope everyone had a good Easter and I am happy to say that Passover ends today at noon. I have found it is even harder to do dairy free while also trying to follow the strict dietary laws of Passover. Needless to say we have had a lot of chicken in my house this past week.

On Easter Sunday we decided to try to venture out to a restaurant and see how we could do with my little guy, and finding him something to eat. My daughter enjoyed some grilled chicken (there is that chicken again) and some buttered corn nibblets. My son after an exhausting search of non dairy/ non breaded food had some dry (meaning no butter added) scrambled egg and some apple sauce.

I talked to one of the Managers at the restaurant and they printed me a copy of their allergen list. Below are all the food items inside the restaurant that are listed as dairy free. Hope this helps people.

image taken from google search.
  • Bananna Nut Bread
  • Mini Bun
  • Rye Bread
  • Sourdough Bread
  • Texas Toast
  • Wheat Bread
  • Applesauce

Out of 6 pages of food items these are all the ones listed as safe to eat. All The ones in orange are the actual meals everything else is mostly bread and side items.

I plan on getting a hold of these list at all common restaurants so I can not only keep a file folder in my car for him but also try to help as many people as I can with this allergy that is so commonly overlooked.

If there is a restaurant your interested in post it in the comments and I will do my best to find the answers for you.
