What is a Dairy Allergy?

On Monday my son went to an allergy specialist due to his age. He is 13 months old. We found out that a lot if not all his medical problems have been due to him having a severe dairy allergy. It is so horrible knowing that the food I have been feeding him has been making him so sick, I felt hopeless and just awful. I am sure every mother has those feelings when a food allergy is discovered in their child. I was handed so much paperwork and literature it was all so overwhelming.

Now, you may be asking what does a dairy allergy involve. Most people myself included just thought alright no milk, they have soy, almond, and coconut milk no big deal, right? WRONG!

Dairy allergies include but not limited to...
  • Butter, butter fat, butter oil, butter acid, butter ester(s)
  • Buttermilk
  • Casein ---Found is Veggie Cheese Slices and other items
  • Casein hydrolysate
  • Caseinates (in all forms)
  • Cheese
  • Cottage cheese
  • Cream
  • Curds
  • Custard
  • Diacetyl
  • Ghee
  • Half-and-half
  • Lactalbumin, lactalbumin phosphate
  • Llactoferrin
  • Lactose
  • Lactulose
  • Milk (in all forms, including condensed, derivative, dry, evaporated, goat’s milk and milk from other animals, lowfat, malted, milkfat, nonfat, powder, protein, skimmed, solids, whole)

  • Recaldent(R)
  • Rennet casein
  • Sour cream, sour cream solids
  • Sour milk solids
  • Tagatose
  • Whey (in all forms)
  • Whey protein hydrolysate
  • Yogurt
Fun huh, but wait there is more. Dairy can also be found in...
  • Artificial butter flavor
  • Baked goods
  • Caramel candies
  • Chocolate
  • Lactic acid starter culture and other bacterial cultures

So you may be asking what can people with dairy allergies eat. I can tell you that a lot of foods can be made dairy free, it just takes a lot more time then it would be to open a box of pancake mix, or running to the nearest store and grabbing a normal loaf of bread.

Hello. Friends, family, bloggers, and other people looking for support and answers. I hope that my blog here can help not only shed some light on this allergy but also help myself and others find ways of managing and helping those with dairy allergies.
