Being new to the whole coupon scene I find saving any amount of money a good day. We don't really stock pile much food and the items that are on coupons we really can't have due to the Dairy allergy or just to much sodium. Prepacked foods that fall under the coupons most if not all have some form of dairy in it, or are just so unhealthy for toddlers that I can't justify purchasing it for when I am to lazy to cook.
I have been trying to cook simple, quick and of course dairy free meals. How has been possible for us since we live on pretty much a single income and I have been taking care of both our food allergy son but also his non food allergy big (15 months older) sister? Some days are a simple pasta dinners or more interesting crock pot meals, for days where i am either to busy or to tired to try to take care of dinner.
Here are some ways that I am able to save money and maybe some of them might help your or your friends family to be able to provide food.
1) Wic- Now I know that there is a stigma to this government program, but let me say that they have been a very important part to our success as providing food for both of our kids. My son was allergic to not only animal dairy but all animal dairy including my breast milk. We went through 6 different formulas till we were able to find one that he was able to keep down at least some of when he was eating. He was born with a few medical issues making feeding him and giving him nutrients he needed to survive. The most expensive of these trail formulas was $75 a bottle and the bottles were smaller then the size of a small Gerber formula container. Wic was always able to give us the formulas we needed and now that he is over a year old they are now giving us his toddler formula as well. His current formula is $19 a can sure that sounds doable but he was going through 5 cans a month and still is that formula alone cost roughly $95. That is JUST his formula they also give my daughter her milk, beans, bread, eggs, juice, and we get a monthly allowance of $16 for fresh fruits and veggies. If you qualify for Wic and are having issues with being able to provide healthy vitamin filled foods I suggest really looking into this program. Because of them my kids and my family are able to eat fresher better foods in a processed unhealthy world.
2) Rewards cards- I use Winn-Dixie for a majority of my shopping. Though it is more expensive then Aldi which I also shop at and Walmart that I refuse to shop at due to quality, Winn- Dixie has a great baby perks system and the amazing FUEL PERKS. The perks system is really simple sign up for the free Winn Dixie card. I signed up for both fuel perks and baby perks. For every $50 or if you purchase items that have fuel perks attached you get money towards gas off at Shell locations. Baby perks gives you coupons every month for items that you purchase a lot plus coupons for Diapers, Wipes, baby food, and baby item/bath product every packet. As well as every $25 you get money towards baby perks. With this alone I save tons of money, not to mention reward members also get certain foods on sale like fresh fruits and veggies even meats.
3) Coupons and Coupons site- I also use coupons from coupons.com as well as coupons that come in the smart source we get in the Thursday paper. I also have started to use Saving star which has a fresh fruit or veggie as a featured product for coupons. Today the healthy item is 20% off broccoli. This site is connected to my Winn Dixie card so when I purchase the item it gets taken off at the register.
4) Pinterest- I bet some of you are thinking, "How can a site that makes you want to put pom poms on pine cones for a Thanksgiving centerpiece help you save money on food?" It is really simple and one of my biggest money saving secrets. When I go shopping I stop at the Meats section and see what is either on sale or cheap. Then I log onto pinterest through the stores wifi and type in the piece of meat and recipes. If I find something that sounds good, that I have either all the ingredients for or most of them, and if it is a dairy free or easily turned into a dairy free meal, I buy it. Not only does it keep cost down but keeps the kitchen interesting. Just yesterday I made a meal of Pork Neck bones in a Jamaican style int eh crock pot with onions, vinegar and spices. I only had to buy the ginger, onion and pork neck bones at the store everything else i had. The neck bones came 2 to a package it was $3.58 for one and the other was $3.18. It feed 6 people and the whole meal was under $9 for everything. And the most amazing part is that it was really really good and fresh.
Hope that this list of things you find helpful. I really love using pinterest. It works with all diets and that is pretty cool if you think about it.
In the end everything I do is so I can see these two amazing people smile and I know that we may not have much but I know that they are eating well and not all this unhealthy cheap easy foods. I don't like being on government assistance but I will do what ever it takes to keep my kids healthy. That is what is most important.
My son at 13 months old was found to have a severe dairy allergy. He can't have any dairy cow or otherwise, whey, butter, chocolate, etc. This is to help not only myself with this new change but hopefully help others too.

Food Allergy Savings, How FARE can help you save money and your family
I don't know how many people know about FARE. FARE stands for Food Allergy Research and Education. It is a great program and their website has a lot of great information on many food allergies. But one thing that many people don't know is that FARE will help you pay for certain things you or your child need. If you need to get a medical alert bracelet or in our case dog tag they will cover some of the cost. If you need to get extra epi pens for school FARE will help by giving the school epi pens! Along with some really good printed materials. Also at least in my state of Florida, the child can legally carry their epi's with them at school.
I highly recommend going to the FARE website and taking a good look around. You can find their site here.
You can become a member and even participate in the annual FARE WALK. We did this for the first time back in June. Was a lot of fun for the whole family and learned about a lot of important things I had not even thought about before going there.

Dairy Free in the kitchen ~ Crock Pot Breakfast Tacos
Back when my husband and I lived in Texas we fell in love with breakfast tacos. Since being stationed to Florida we can't find one anywhere that is as amazing as those from San Antonio. So I decided to figure out how to make some dairy free of course for my little man.
Ingredients
1 dozen eggs
1/2 lb of shaved beef and pork (you can use all beef or all pork if you want to)
1/2 yellow onion
salt & pepper
1 lb frozen roasted tri-cut potatoes (I use Alexia 98% FF Smart classic)
1 cup original almond milk (or which ever milk you need to use just make sure it is unflavored)
Flour Tortilla Shells
Directions
1. Brown meat and onions together, Set aside.
2. Add potatoes to the crock pot
3. In a glass bowl add the eggs, salt and pepper, whisk together then slowly add the milk.
4. Put the meat onion mixture on top of the potatoes, stir. Then add the egg mixture evenly.
5. cover and cook on low for 7 hours.
6. place tortilla shell on a plate spoon the egg mixture into the middle of the shell, roll up and enjoy.
Served 6 with extras.
Sorry no pictures, sadly phone battery decided to die, The whole reason for this meal today was because we were taking a trip to Tampa for my little guy's allergy appointment, so it was a crock pot dinner for us. We left at 1130 am and didn't get home till after 630pm

Little guy might have a new allergy
So this last week has been a bit tough on my little guy and myself. I had to rush him to the night time doctors and it was determined he had an allergic reaction, but not from dairy because he doesn't eat dairy, so the doctors have told me to go back to the allergist and get more test done.
It all started after dinner we removed his diaper and gave him a bath with his big sister(2.5 years and 17 months) he was fine dried him off and got him into a night time diaper and pjs. A few minutes later he started to cry and he had pooped himself, so my mom who was with me the whole time goes to change his diaper she then calls for me slightly panicked and told me something was not alright. my little guys rump was bright red, had lumps and white marks all over him. We quickly got him cleaned up a new diaper, I grabbed the diaper bag, his epi pens and ran to the doctors.
The first thing they did was check his oxygen levels to make sure he wasn't in any a serious medical state. When it was determined he was alright we were able to be slower and more medical with him.
Long story short, though it is already slightly long, he has a new allergy appointment next week and will be tested for bananas, red, yellow, and wheat.

Dairy Free in the Kitchen ~ Easy baked salmon
Now this recipe is most likely the easiest way too cook salmon in the oven. I also cook it in the steamer, but since I was not able to cook this meal myself ( I had a meeting to go to) and my mom is not the worlds best cook I thought it was the best way to go. Everyone loved this well every adult, the kids enjoyed the side of veggie Rotini pasta. This recipe will yield really delicious salmon and incredibly crispy skin. Think of it as a salmon skin chip.
SIMPLE SALMON WITH CRISPY SKIN
Ingredients
Salmon fillet (doesn't matter how many or how much)
Olive Oil
garlic powder
dill
pinch of salt
Directions
1. Place tin foil on a cookie sheet
2. Place salmon onto the tin foil
3. Add salt garlic and dill to the salmon (use your eyes and your taste to add what you want)
4. Drizzle with olive oil
5. Place in the cold oven
6. Turn oven on 400 degrees and keep the salmon in the oven for 25 min.
That is it. Simple and yummy. The key is the salmon going into the oven while it is cold.

Dairy Free in the Kitchen~ Cilantro Lime Garlic Shrimp Quinoa
This meal makes about 5 cups. This one was not a big hit with the kids but the adults all liked it, minus my picky eater husband because it had to much green in it...sigh. I think if the kids were older they would have been fine, I just think ti was to early to try shrimp with the toddlers.

1lb shrimp (precooked frozen shelled divined thawed)
4tbs. minced garlic
2 tbs. veggie oil
juice from 1/2 a lime
1.cup chopped loosely packed fresh cilantro

4tbs. minced garlic
2 tbs. veggie oil

- Take the juice from the lime and cilantro and put it in a bowl, add shrimp including juices and quinoa, mix and enjoy.
Dairy Free in the Kitchen ~ Roasted Green Beans & Slow Cooked Herb Pork Loin
This is a great side dish for any meal that isn't pasta based I would say. I made this with a slow cooked herb pork loin. The little guy now 16 months was not a huge fan but then again he is limited on his teeth so it may have been not the easiest for him but the 2.5 year old and the picky eater husband loved them. I also had my parents over for dinner they loved them as well.
ROASTED GREEN BEANS
Ingredients
1 lb green beans or more if you want you'll eat them trust me
1 tbs. olive oil
garlic powder
onion powder
Ziploc gallon bag or large bowl
- preheat oven to 425 degrees
- wash and prep green beans by removing the tips and put either into a bag or bowl
- put olive oil, garlic powder and onion powder on top of green beans and mix
- pour onto a cookie sheet lined with tin foil or parchment paper
- bake 20 min, flip and bake another 15 min.
- put into a serving dish and enjoy
SLOW COOKED HERB PORK LOIN
Ingredients
Plain unflavored pork loin I used 2lbs but I was making food for 6 and had a good amount of left overs
garlic powder
onion powder
basil
salt
black pepper
2 tbs. minced garlic
Chicken broth ( for 2 lbs. 8oz, for 1lb 4oz)
- Put chicken broth into slow cooker and place pork loin on top
- season the pork loin not the broth, then put the minced garlic everywhere
- cook on low 6-7 hours
Sorry no pictures for his one. Sadly when it comes out of the slow cooker it shreds and shredded pork did not photograph well, but it tastes AMAZING!
Dairy Free in the Kitchen~ Veggie Rotini with Skinless Beef Kielbasa
This meal here is by far the most successful meal I have made, it is also by far the easiest, which is pretty great to me. All you need is 5 ingredients and for my family of 4 it cost roughly 1.50 a person. I don't include the spices since I would have no idea how to calculate that cost.
VEGGIE ROTINI with SKINLESS BEEF KIELBASA
Ingredients
1 package of skinless beef kielbasa
1 box of your favorite veggie medley rotini pasta (or any pasta that your kid likes just get the veggie version hidden veggies while eating pasta)
garlic powder
onion powder
paprika
- put water in a pot and boil it. While waiting for water to boil cut kielbasa into circles no more then an inch thick.
- put pasta in boiling water and cook based on the packages directions
- sprinkle the garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika into a skillet and put on medium high heat, place the kielbasa circles flat in the pan on top of the seasonings and cook about 3 min.
- flip the kielbasa circles over and cook till meat reaches color you like. (if you like crisper edges cook longer)
- drain pasta and put into a large bowl.
- Without draining pour the kielbasa and its juices on top of the pasta. Toss and serve.

Dinner impossible?
It has been 11 days since I have last posted, from the kids being sick to me going back to work it has been really crazy here. Today I am just going to talk about what happened yesterday and if the kids allow me to later today I will post past recipes that were a success and some that were more misses with the kids but me and the husband enjoyed.
Yesterday was Sunday. I had plans to actually go out with some other moms for lunch, the kids were staying with my husband since it was leaving during nap/quiet time I thought everything would be alright. My mom said she was going to make dinner since after my "play date" I was taking the kids to lil 500 which is a local go kart track that has a set up for little kids to ride with their parents and they wont crowd the track when they are young.
My mom has made this dish since I was a little kid and everyone in my family including my husband loves it. It is called Turkey Loaf found at Walmart in the freezer isle. Well my daughter hates turkey but my mom was like why not try it, plus I didn't have to cook so i was happy. When my mom brought it over I did a quick glance at the ingredients, something that seems like 2nd nature now that I have been doing it for almost 4 months. Right there in BOLD letters were the 2 words I dread seeing Contains Milk. So now everyone is sitting down to dinner and I have no food for my boy. Luckily, my mom also made DF mashed potatoes and had cranberry sauce which my kids love. So, while my little guy was eating cranberry sauce I quickly heated up some DF waffles that were previously made and frozen in my freezer. Crisis diverted, I was just so happy I looked at the ingredients.

Dairy Free In the Kitchen ~ Roasted Brussels Sprouts
Last night for dinner we have had so far our most successful dairy free meal. Dinner was Rotini veggie pasta with skinless all beef kielbasi and roasted Brussels sprouts. Everyone ate up all the pasta, my son was not interested in the meat but he did try the sprouts, I just think they were to thick for him to chew, but he kept trying. I gave him and his sister some watermelon for trying something new.
Today I am going to share with you the Brussels sprout recipe that i tried last night that was a major success with my picky eater husband and my I won't try anything green daughter that they both loved. And Completely dairy free. Brussels sprouts are a semi time consuming side to make and it takes 20-25 min to bake so plan accordingly so that other things will finish around the same time.
Roasted Brussels Sprouts
Ingredients
about 1lbs fresh Brussels Sprouts
garlic powder
olive oil
Tin foil
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. line cookie sheet with tin foil
3. wash, trim the bottoms of, remove any wilted leaves, and cut in half the Brussels sprouts
4. place sprouts and any leaves that separated but are still good in a bowl and sprinkle with garlic powder, and olive oil, mix with a spoon or hands
5. place sprouts flat side down on cookie sheet and bake for 20-25 min. depending on how browned you like it.
6. Enjoy!
I only wish I made more since it was used as a bargaining chip with my 2 year old daughter to get her to eat her pasta. CRAZY!

Dairy free in the kitchen
My husband has been back to work now for a week. With the company he works for he can be home anywhere from 5 to 8pm and sometimes though not many even later. I remember one time before he deployed he came home after 10pm. Anyway, due to his work eating out is not as easy as it was before he went back to work. It has made me cook a lot more at home then ever before. It is more then that though, I now spend a minimum of an hour at the grocery store most of the time I am reading labels, of some of our old staples then standing their in the store trying to figure out how to make my husband's favorite foods into something our son can eat. This is not easy. I wish that there was an app that you could just scan the barcode of and it would flash green for its dairy free, yellow if it is used on shared lines or in a place that has dairy and red for it has dairy in it. To bad i am not in anyway techie enough to do this.
This past week I have made a number of dairy free meals some keepers some tweaks and some never again. So far my greatest success has been the chocolate pudding.
Using nothing but 1/4c sugar, 1/2c dark chocolate Hersey's cocoa powder and 1 box of silken tofu. All you have to do is put it in a blender and then let it sit in the fridge. Everyone loved this, my daughter a picky 2 year old, my son the dairy allergy child, myself, my mom and my dad. The only one who did not like it was my even pickier husband. After a quick consult with my vegetarian best friend, I figured out that the "sour" taste he was having was due to his not liking of dark chocolate. He is willing to try it again but with a "milk" chocolate substituted for the dark. I like dark chocolate, so if you do to then you should really try this delicious dairy free dessert.
I know think I am going to post some of my more fun meals once a week. Maybe tasty Tuesdays or something like that.

My Son's Medical Id
Like many other parents out there at some point the discussion of medical alert jewelery will come into effect with a severe food allergy not just dairy. It is an important piece of your child's wardrobe even if your child is with you all the time it is good to get them used to wearing it, that way when you child starts daycare, play dates, birthday parties, school, sleepovers they know to have it on them at all times.
For my son we decided to go the route of the medical dog tag, that way he would feel like his daddy cause he wears dog tags. We were worried about the normal toddler things (eating it, chocking on the necklace part) but we have been really surprised by how well he took to it. From the first time we put it on him he has been 100% fine with it. Sure he nibbles on it from time to time, but hey he isn't even 2 yet.
Now, I know their are tons of sites and catalogues to purchase tags from. You can even go to CVS and get these cute little rubbery food allergy bracelets
.They have different foods and I have been told that at the store you might even be lucky enough to get the dairy one which has a kind of tired looking milk carton on it. My son has incredibly sensitive skin so we knew that these would not work well for him.
We got his medical dog tag here. The name of the site is American Medical ID. From what we found it was pretty comparable in price and had quicker and cheaper shipping and letter pricing.
On our sons tag we went the $39.99 Stainless Steel,
http://www.americanmedical-id.com/product/stainless-steel-dog-tag-red-51
We went with the red since it is the most common color for medical alerts. On the front we put his first and last name. On the back we put
Severe Food Allergy
NO DAIRY
Carries Epi Pen
Call 911 after use
ICE (my name)-Mother
and my phone number
There is even more room left on the back so I can always add more if he ends up getting more food allergies in the future which is another reason why i liked this companies.
Well I hope that helped. If you have any questions or comments please list them below. Your child is never to young to start wearing a medical alert. There are always family members, friends, baby sitters, strangers who just won't know or understand food allergies. Better safe then sorry.

buffets for older kids?
When we go out to eat I am always worried about my son, and what he can and can not eat at any location. My biggest fears is that something will get lost in translation and he will get sick or worse. No place to eat is as nerve wracking as a buffet. We as a family love to eat at buffets. My daughter eats her weight in rice, Mandarin oranges, watermelon, cucumbers, black beans, and some meat, and my son enjoys eating hard boiled eggs, soy beans from the salad area and jello for dessert. The kids are free till the age of 3 so it doesn't bother us to go out and eat, but as my son gets older I wonder if eating at these types of places will even work for us. The language barrier is one thing but the foods being cross contaminated is another concern. I wonder if other people eat at buffets and if so what they let their kids eat from them.

Restaurant Food List ~ Red Robin.....Yumm!
For my husband's main meal upon returning from deployment was a request to go to Red Robin. It was just built a few months before he returned and as everyone knows Red Robin is known for their Delicious gooey hamburgers and cheeseburgers. So I was hesitant to take my little guy there. The fears were quickly shot down as soon as I was looking at their website. they have an amazing allergy site online that lets you select which items you need to avoid then gives you a list in breakdowns of what you can eat. Since my son is only allergic to dairy that was the only item I selected. So below is the list of items that are said to be safe for dairy allergies.

4th of July Extravaganza
Hope everyone had a good 4th of July. If you are like me it can be a time of stress and uncertainty for your food allergy little one(s). Every year we go to the city's fireworks show at the local park. This was my son's first year going and we were really on guard with everything, mostly cause you have to be. He couldn't go into the bounce house with his sister because other little kids had ice cream all over their faces or were eating pizza or popcorn and we couldn't chance the cross contamination. We did let him sit at the door and get bounced, he love it. We made sure he didn't get touched by random people as well, and he had his medical alert dog tag on at all times outside his clothes while we were anywhere near people. We also had plenty of wipes and sanitizer with us.
I packed the kids safe food as well. I made them veggie pasta and we also had grapes, sliced apples with peanut butter, and marshmallow peeps ( DAIRY FREE). As for me and my husband and my parents we did what we always did, bought subs from a local shop and bought fresh squeezed lemonade at the park. Good Times.
The best part of the night of course the fireworks. My little guy did great for his first time, we did have a few issues with the really bright fireworks but that is due to his light sensitivity. And he past out in the stroller on the way back to the shuttle bus. His big sister stayed awake till we got her into the car seat to drive home. It was a good night.

Medieval Times Orlando
First let me say hope that all the dads and single moms and deployed family units had a good father's day last night. For father's day My dad, mom, husband, 2 kids, brother, sister in law, and my niece all went to Medieval Times Orlando. If you don't know about medieval times it is a dinner show that involves a knights tournament, and medieval fare with medieval utensils (hands). They have a set menu that they give to everyone, but do have some special changes for those who are vegetarians, vegan, GF, and allergies. The normal meal is a bowl of tomato bisque, garlic bread, a spare rib w/ BBQ sauce, a quarter of chicken, a garlic buttered potato half, and an apple turnover. As you read it is not all dairy free. So after a two hour phone call dealing with the manager and having him read the ingredients of everything they make we ended up with a completely special menu of Hummus and raw veggies, Spare rib w/ BBQ sauce, quarter chicken, and fresh oranges. We were also able to bring his booster seat with the tray so there would be even lesser chance of cross contamination. It was a fun time and I am so happy it was able to work out. It isn't easy doing anything with a toddler let alone 3 toddlers and when 1 is dairy allergic it is anything but. For us Medieval Times was alright. It involves a lot of conversations and special seating and nice mangers.

Restaurant Food List ~ Olive Garden
The time has come for the one and only Olive Garden. On their restaurant food list it states that everything is made to order but things on their grills or fryer can not be guaranteed free from cross contamination. My son and my daughter were able to share a meal here which is something that doesn't get to happen very often but when it does it is an amazing feeling that is hard for people to understand unless they go through this as well. They had the kids build your own pasta, and had boiled small shells with no sauce and an add on of a single meatball which was on its own plate and came completely separated from the pasta.
Here is the list of items that has been written as dairy free on the food list the manager handed me from his kitchen.
If you have a restaurant or other eatery that you would like to have information for let me know in the comments or on facebook.

Mall Kiosk Food List ~ Doc Popcorn
Doc Popcorn is a new kiosk in the Altamonte Mall in Altamonte Springs, Florida. I am unsure if it is a chain or just a single entity. Anyway, it is a flavored popcorn food stop. They do have a few dairy free items, but only ONE popcorn popping machine. They did say they clean it out at the end of every flavor but they make as needed. So if you have serious Cross Contamination issues like my son. I would most likely say to stay away.
I am actually posting an image of the list and then explaining it a bit more in depth. The reason for this is that the list is not as easily understood as it could be.
The flavors you CAN eat if you decide to eat there are as followed:

Orlando FARE Walk ~ 2014
The FARE Walk at the Blue Jacket Park in Central Florida was today. It was very exciting some Teams had team shirts. Next Year we will have one for our team Wes' Wheyless Wonders. We ended up in 6th place, but raised money for a good cause. Here are some pictures from today.
It was a good time and I am glad that we were able to join in. After the Walk we went to Mellow Mushroom, and my son had his first ever piece of pizza. Vegan crust with Vegan Diaya Cheese. I have to admitt it was very good. He also had a kids meal that he SHARED with his non food allergy sister for the first time. They had the kids pretzel with sliced apples. What about cross contamination you ask.
At Mellow Mushroom they have written in their menu that they have a trained staff that will change their aprons, gloves, wash hand, and use a different oven and table to prepare, cook and serve from. So their is no fear of cross contamination.
Needless to say it was a perfect way to end our adventure out with the Central Florida FARE Walk.

Pirates Dinner Adventure~ Orlando Location
For my parents 35th wedding anniversary I got tickets for them and my kids and myself to Pirates Dinner Adventure. My mom had always wanted to go and since they are having a special for $18 dollar tickets for their 18 year anniversary. I made sure when I bought the tickets to find out about the food for my son. The meals can be special made in ways of Kosher, vegetarian, and GF. But when I asked about dairy allergies the tone quickly changed to maybe you should bring your toddler some food. The meal without upgrades consisted of Roasted chicken, butter steamed veggies, and a type of Mexican style rice. If you purchased an upgrade you could have a NY strip steak.
So in the way I saw it, my son was young enough that I was ale to have food readily available to him, but as he gets older it might be more difficult in that type of place.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there. Today myself, kids, my mom and my dad went to Boston's Market for the Mother's special. If you don't know what that is. It is where the moms get to eat for free as long as someone is paying for their meals. So my dad and my daughter paid for food and myself and my mom where free. My son is the one with dairy allergies. So I made sure to get my chicken on its own plate so he could have some food.
They only have 4 items which he can have so here is the list of dairy free items that you can have at the restaurant.

Our 1st major issue while eatting out
Today we went to Applebee's. As you know if you have been reading my blog I did a food list of this restaurant so how could I follow the list and still my son have problems when he ate there. Simple, Cross Contamination of the FRYER OIL!
I gave him 2 chips from the chips and salsa he proceeded to vomit this horribly thick goop. I picked him up out of the high chair and rushed him into the bathroom to make sure he didn't vomit anymore in front of other customers again.
The waitress, food runner, manager, and hostess all came over to see what happened and if he was okay, since we had said that he was allergic to dairy and had checked to make sure that there was no butter or anything on his food. What we were told was that the fryer oil is shared with anything that needs to be fried. Things like Mozzarella sticks and pot stickers all go into the same oil.
The staff apologized profusely. Everyone kept coming over to make sure he was alright, I luckily did not have to epi him since he got it out of him so fast is my thought.
So remember if it is fried always ask if there is a separate fryer and separate oil. If the answer is no, I would say stay away.

Drinks A'hoy ~ Dairy Free Adult Drink List.
Hope everyone is being safe this 5th of May. For many this day is the day that it is okay to go nutty and drink till you black out. Sadly, it falls on a Monday this year so the party doesn't get to go all night long. I have searched the internet for a list of dairy free drinks for this day, and when my son is older I am sure he will apprecate the effort.
Though I couldn't find anything that says dairy free I was able to find a vegan friendly liquor, beer, wine guide. It is called Barnivore: your vegan wine, beer, and liquor guide. You can view their site here.
Happy Drinking everyone, as always if you are not sure ask.

Restaurant Food List ~ Applebee's
Applebee's are practically everywhere. So, it is no surprise that someone has asked me to find information for them. Applebee's has a wonderful allergen list. They have broken down their menu for multiple food allergies, including but not limited to Soy and Peanut allergies. The restaurant has stated that they use a shared kitchen with cooking and preparation of food items and places like the fryer use both dairy free items as well as dairy items. The company also states in bold that because they use a shared area that they can not guarantee that the food items can be completely free of allergens. So to me this sounds like the biggest problem here is cross contamination, but then again that is a major issue everywhere.
Here is a list of the food items that Applebee's says is dairy free.

Restaurant Food List ~ Mellow Mushroom
Today we tackle our favorite food to eat when your too tired to cook. That is right Pizza! But wait, how can we get pizza when we are to tired to cook it ourselves. The answer is Mellow Mushroom. Not only can you do dairy free their but they also have an amazing allergen sorting system that you can view here. This is a great tool if you have multiple food allergies.
Mellow Mushroom has been around a lot longer then you would think but I will admit I never knew they had a menu for the dairy free using Daiya Foods Cheeses. As with all restaurants you still need to let the servers know that you have a dairy allergy even if you order the dairy free version of their food.
So here is the list of foods that Mellow Mushroom says is dairy free
If you have a place you would like me to try to find the information for let me know in the comments.
Now, enjoy some pizza!

Unexpected benefits of being dairy free
So if your like me and have to now figure out how to take all the dairy out of your or your child's diet. I have been noticing that my child has started sleeping very quiet since I started taking dairy out of his diet. He used to snore and make these really weird noises while he slept and now it is so quiet and still that I have to check on him by putting my hand on his chest to feel him breathe. I wanted to know why, and after some research I found that when you remove dairy from your diet after having respiratory issues it lessens the problems rather quickly.
This got me thinking. What other benefits are associated with dairy free living.
This got me thinking. What other benefits are associated with dairy free living.
- The respiratory issues lessen rather quickly
- loss of weight occurs
- Your sense of taste will be stronger
- decreased likelihood of developing osteoporosis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and heart disease

The restaurant has complied a list of safe foods to eat for the spring season for the non dairy community. You can find other list here. This is one of the few places I have found so far that actually has a good assortment of actual meals which is really great in my mind. Dairy & Eczema
Did you know that dairy intolerance and allergy is the most common food related triggers that cause eczema?
But, what is eczema? It is a skin condition that produces
welts and small blisters on the skin along with inflammation. Eczema is commonly found in infants and is most likely
outgrown by adulthood. Children with eczema typically have parents that
suffer from allergies or asthma, according to MedlinePlus.
Eczema is not treatable, but it is manageable by eliminating the various
triggers that cause it to flare-up.
Minor cases of eczema are treated by applying
hydrocortisone creams and taking an oral antihistamine. Extreme symptoms may require a prescription from a doctor
for a corticosteroid lotion.
I find that if my child has itchy skin from eczema applying a
cool compress to the areas and putting the kid in loose fitting clothes helps.

Restaurant Food List ~ First Watch
This is one of my family's favorite places to eat on a weekend brunch. They don't use any heat lamps or fryers and all their food is made to order. This means that they can work with you more then other places on working on food for you. This pretty much means they can make your eggs, toast, and sandwiches dry(no butter) or without cheese.
Here is a list of items that the company has said is dairy free. They do have a full allergen list online here, so if you have more then one food allergy you can get a better idea of what it has to offer.
If you have a restaurant you want me to compile a food list for let me know in the comments below.

The Story of my son, Wes.
I figured since I started this blog for my son, so when he is older he has something that can help him, and something that can help others, I should probably tell you about my son.
We were told that we needed to enjoy as much time as we could with him. That's right we were told that Wes COULD DIE. Being told that your child might not live is horrible, your whole life crashes down around you and it makes it hard to breathe let alone think.
This on top of my husband deploying was a really bad time. We knew that at 3 months old that when my husband deployed that it could have been the last time he saw him alive. When Wes was born he seemed fine a nice pink color, good set of lungs, all his fingers and toes. Then on his 1st full day of life he had his circumcision. Afterwards, things started to get a bit weird. He started to turn yellow, and became jaundice.
He also was having problems keeping his body temp. up. He stayed that way for about 2 weeks after we left the hospital but he was still perfect. Yellow, but perfect. Then something started happening. We were told to give him as much skin to skin time to try and raise his body temp. We always had him in just a diaper on my or my husband's chest wrapped in a blanket.
We
just wanted him to get warm. Then the feedings started to go wonky. He
started vomiting all his food up, he didn't eat, and he became really
weak and just slept for close to 20 hours a day. The house, the chair,
the sofa everything smelled of regurgitated milk. We were scared and
horribly worried, and during all this we still had Alice to think about
and take care of
.
Thank goodness my parents were close by. We had to go to the doctors at least every other day for weight checks and formula changes.
We stopped breast feeding, he went on I think 5 or 6 different formulas, but he just kept vomiting and in turn he just kept loosing weight. He soon became nothing but skin and bones, he couldn't even lift his arms.Every other day we would go to the doctor checking his weight changing his formula. We were sent to a pediatric surgeon, who in turn sent us to the ER for an MRI and a barium exam. It was discovered that Wes had an underdeveloped esophagus, which is why everything he had would come back up. He was given anti ulcer medication for his throat. At 3 months old he had just gotten over his birth weight.
At 5 months old we found the first of the formulas that started to stay in his system. Similac Soy Formula. Then we switched it and started having even more success in Gerber Soy Concentrate formula. As it turns out liquid formula worked better then powder. He finally was able to go to the doctor once a week and then once every 2 weeks, and then once every 3 weeks. Through it all he was always smiling. At 8 months old Wes went to the doctors again and we were so happy to hear that he made a complete turn around. The doctors actually told me that they were not expecting him to make it as far as he did.
My little boy my little fighter was finally getting better. He was finally able to start eating baby food and he has been thriving since. So much so that my little guy is now in the 85% for weight. At 11 months he started big people food, and working on using a sippy cup. Wes is now 13 months old and in 1-3 more months he will get to meet his daddy again and hold his hand, and interact with him other then just sleeping on his chest.
So there it is there is the story. Sorry it was so long. We now know that he was born allergic to milk, even milk from me. I just wonder if he didn't have all these other problems that masked the allergy how much faster he would have gotten better. I know that I had done the best for him without knowing all the facts. He is now a happy little guy, chasing his big sister around the living room trying to get hugs. And chasing me with his bowl trying to get more snacks (dairy free of course).

Unexpected Sources of Milk
Today I bring you more information from the FARE website. You can view more information about FARE here.
When we go shopping we now know that we have to read labels really carefully to keep ourselves and our LOs (Little One) safe from milk by products, milk itself, and possiblities of cross contamination.
But, what about those shopping list items that may not be as easy to spot? Here is a few things to keep in mind when you go to the grocery store.

But, what about those shopping list items that may not be as easy to spot? Here is a few things to keep in mind when you go to the grocery store.
- Deli meat slicers are frequently used for both meat and cheese products.
- Some brands of canned tuna fish contain casein, a milk protein.
- Many non-dairy products contain casein (a milk derivative), listed on the ingredient labels.
- Some specialty products made with milk substitutes (i.e., soy-, nut- or rice-based dairy products) are manufactured on equipment shared with milk.
- Some meats may contain casein as a binder. Check all labels carefully.
- Some medications contain milk protein.
- Shellfish is sometimes dipped in milk to reduce the fishy odor. Ask questions about the risk of milk contact when purchasing shellfish.
- Many restaurants put butter on steaks after they have been grilled to add extra flavor. The butter is not visible after it melts.

Restaurant Food List ~ Bob Evans
Hope everyone had a good Easter and I am happy to say that Passover ends today at noon. I have found it is even harder to do dairy free while also trying to follow the strict dietary laws of Passover. Needless to say we have had a lot of chicken in my house this past week.
On Easter Sunday we decided to try to venture out to a restaurant and see how we could do with my little guy, and finding him something to eat. My daughter enjoyed some grilled chicken (there is that chicken again) and some buttered corn nibblets. My son after an exhausting search of non dairy/ non breaded food had some dry (meaning no butter added) scrambled egg and some apple sauce.
I talked to one of the Managers at the restaurant and they printed me a copy of their allergen list. Below are all the food items inside the restaurant that are listed as dairy free. Hope this helps people.
I plan on getting a hold of these list at all common restaurants so I can not only keep a file folder in my car for him but also try to help as many people as I can with this allergy that is so commonly overlooked.
If there is a restaurant your interested in post it in the comments and I will do my best to find the answers for you.

O'Soy ~ Oh No!!
I was so happy when I saw at my local Winn-Dixie that they had a yogurt that was soy, dairy free and "vegan". Since my son loves creamy foods and now that he can't have them I picked up a set and couldn't wait to give it to him.
O' Soy is from Stonyfield company.
He loved it. I was happy, then he started having a bad reaction to it. I called the company number on their website which said they were open M-F 8-6pm, to see if there was any possibility of cross contamination since they make a lot of whole milk yogurts as well.
The phone's computer said that no one was their due to them all being in training. So I wrote an email and waited I received an email about 4 hours later. This is what I received, remember I wanted to know about cross contamination.
Hello,
Thanks for reaching out with your question. Our O'Soy organic soy yogurt is
a lactose-free, non-dairy source of calcium and protein. It's great for
those who want a delicious way to enjoy the nutritional benefits of soy,
and one 6-oz serving of O’Soy provides 7g of soy protein. Additionally,
we're happy to say that O'Soy is certified vegan.
We hope this is helpful, please don’t hesitate to give us a shout if you
have any other questions. Thanks again for getting in touch.
Sincerely,
The folks at Stonyfield
Please note that this is what it says on the package of yogurt, hence why I purchased it to begin with. So I tried again.
Thank you for telling me what your package says, but as I originally asked I wanted to know about the possibility of cross contamination with dairy products.
I wrote that email a few days ago. Considering that they responded the 1st time only 4 hours later and it was more then 4 hours till 5pm on a Thursday, and it is now Saturday. I take this as they do not want to answer in fear of ruining their "Vegan" status.
*Please note that the last statement is only my opinion and is not in anyway related to the company.*
So please be careful if you or your child is really allergic to dairy, in my own opinion I would not chance this product.

What is a Dairy Allergy?
On Monday my son went to an allergy specialist due to his age. He is 13 months old. We found out that a lot if not all his medical problems have been due to him having a severe dairy allergy. It is so horrible knowing that the food I have been feeding him has been making him so sick, I felt hopeless and just awful. I am sure every mother has those feelings when a food allergy is discovered in their child. I was handed so much paperwork and literature it was all so overwhelming.
Now, you may be asking what does a dairy allergy involve. Most people myself included just thought alright no milk, they have soy, almond, and coconut milk no big deal, right? WRONG!
Dairy allergies include but not limited to...
Hello. Friends, family, bloggers, and other people looking for support and answers. I hope that my blog here can help not only shed some light on this allergy but also help myself and others find ways of managing and helping those with dairy allergies.
You can also get more information about dairy allergies at FARE.
